Just a picture of two Sonoran hot dogs from El Güero Canelo, Phoenix

I’d been waiting until I have an interesting story to post with this photo of two Sonoran hot dogs at El Güero Canelo in Phoenix. However, after four months, I’ve decided to go ahead and post it anyway.

It was Sunday, Kathryn and I had just left church, we were hungry, and we hadn’t had a Sonoran hot dog in a while. That’s pretty much the entire story.

What’s a Sonoran hot dog? A little piece of heaven, that’s what. The franks are wrapped in bacon and served on a fresh bolillo roll with beans, diced tomatoes, fresh onions, grilled onions, topped with mustard, mayonnaise, and jalapeño sauce, typically accompanied by a chili pepper. And since that’s not enough of a hand-held heart attack for yours truly, I generally make a trip to the condiment bar and throw some shredded cheese on top.

I highly recommend it as an occasional treat. I highly discourage it as a dietary staple.

These Sonoran hot dogs were definitely as tasty as they were pretty, and they were definitely pretty. If I remember correctly, these were both Sammy dogs, which have two franks on each roll, and they were washed down with an ice-cold Mexican Coca-Cola that Kathryn and I shared like two teenagers on a date.

It was a little early for lunch, so for most of the time we were there, we were the only customers in the dining area. As usual, though, our smiling faces eventually brought the crowds around.
